Kampong Speu provincial governor Vei Samnang said prison officers recaptured 26 prisoners from Kampong Speu provincial prison who staged a breakout on Sunday.
According to Mr Samnang, at about 7.30pm on Sunday, one prisoner pretended to be seriously sick and in need of immediate medical attention. His cellmates alerted the prison guards and suggested he be transported to the provincial referral hospital.
The prison guards responded by calling an ambulance to pick up the prisoner.
“However when the prison guards unlocked the cell to carry the sick prisoner into the ambulance, his 25 cellmates pushed past the guards and ran out of the cell. During the commotion, the prison guards closed the cell doors to stop them from breaking out of prison but some of the prisoners hit the guards, inflicting injuries on two of them,” said Mr Samnang yesterday.
He added provincial police and military police forces were soon notified for assistance. When they arrived they surrounded the prison facility and were able to capture all 26 prisoners the same night.
“The prison guards were not to blame for the incident because they were tricked by the prisoners so they could escape from prison,” said Mr Samnang.
Provincial prison chief Major General In Sovanny confirmed all prisoners were re-arrested before they could exit the prison compound.
The prison guards are currently questioning the 26 prisoners, who each face between six months and a year in prison if convicted.
Maj Gen Sovanny said security will be further strengthened to prevent such an incident from happening again.
