Cambodian-American taekwondo star Casandre Nicole Tubbs added to her collection of accolades with a bronze medal finish in the recently held Costa Rica Taekwondo Open 2020. The tournament was held at Heredia, a city close to San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica.

The Costa Rica Open Taekwondo Open is among the most prestigious international taekwondo competitions, with participants coming from Europe, North America, Asia, Central America and other parts of the world.

Tubbs, who also represents Cambodia in the Southeast Asian Games and other competitions, took the bronze after placing third in the Senior Women-62kg category together with Raphaella Galacho of Brazil. Althea Laurin of France won the gold, while Maria Espinosa of Mexico took home a silver medal.

The tournament brought together scores of men and women participants from the US, Cuba, Hungary, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Peru, France and Puerto Rico.

There was a multitude of global taekwondo stars that joined the competition, including Cuba’s double world champion Rafael Alba. Alba went on to top the Senior Men-+87kg.

The participants competed in sixteen categories, namely: Senior Men-54kg, Senior Men-58kg, Senior Men-68kg, Senior Men-74kg, Senior Men-80kg, Senior Men-87kg, Senior Men-+87kg, Senior Women-46kg, Senior Women-49kg, Senior Women-53kg, Senior Women-57kg, Senior Women-62kg, Senior Women-67kg, Senior Women-73kg and Senior Women-+73kg.

Tubbs’s strong performance in Costa comes several months after her impressive showing in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines.

Tubbs won the silver medal in the 2019 SEA Games after losing to Pham Thi Thu Hien of Vietnam in the finals of the Lightweight (62kg). It was her second loss to the Vietnamese taekwondo star, who also beat her during the Asian Games the year before.

Tubbs also represented Cambodia in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. But unfortunately, she lost by a single point to Pham in the Women’s -57 kg Round of 32 opener. In that match, Tubbs was on the verge of winning before Pham scored two points on a body kick just before the final bell.

Tubbs and 2014 Asian Games gold medalist Sorn Seavmey are widely considered as Cambodia’s best women taekwondo players.  Tubbs is currently based in Texas.
