Phnom Penh Municipal Court today convicted and sentenced 13 men and one woman from two to nine years for organizing a coup to overthrow the Government of Cambodia in 2018.
The court sentenced Sam Serey, 46, the President of the “Khmer National Liberation Front” who is living in Denmark in absentia, to nine years in prison and a fine of $ 2,000. A warrant of arrest has been issued.
Vorn Savann, Hong Kim, Sam Taing, and San Saory were charged with “organizing combat groups and production or trafficking of weapons, explosives and ammunition” while the other ten were charged with “ participation in combat group and production or trafficking of weapons, explosives and ammunition” under Articles 485, 486 and 488 of the Criminal Code.
They were arrested between September 30 and October 5 last year in various places in Phnom Penh, Kampong Speu, Kampot and Pursat provinces.
Police seized a total of 25 AK-47 rifles.
Mr Sam Serey, the President of Khmer National Liberation Front, said today in an interview via messenger with a Khmer Times journalist said, the court sentencing him to nine years was unjust because he had not committed what he was accused of.
However, Mr Serey said he will not appeal because he did not trust the judiciary system.
