A total of 155 inmates are expected to be pardoned by the King or have their sentences reduced before the upcoming Khmer New Year.
Kim Santepheap, Justice Ministry spokesman, today said the ministry received 399 pardon requests and the National Commission for the Evaluation of Prisoners chose 155 of them.
“Forty-eight will have their sentences reduced by 12 months, 35 reduced by nine months and 45 reduced by six months,” Mr Santepheap said, noting the rest will be pardoned.
He said a royal decree will be issued by King Norodom Sihamoni next month.
According to the General Department of Prisons, nearly 38,000 are currently detained in 28 prisons across the Kingdom.
