13 provinces and capital of Cambodia hit by COVID-19 pandemic

As of Sunday, March 22, 13 out of Cambodia’s 25 provinces have reported COVID-19 positive patients and within a spate of 10 days, has seen the number infected shoot to 84 as of Sunday night.

A significant number was being tested positive after March 10 and in the past 12 days, has seen infections running into more than 60.

A health ministry official speaking on condition of anonymity said that the French nationals tested positive on Saturday and Sunday may have probably left a trail of contacts in several provinces they were in before stopping at Sihanoukville.

Among the places were Siem Reap, Battambang for the river festival, Phnom Penh, an island of Sihanoukville and finally Sihanoukville.

“We are in a nightmare situation where contact tracing is being deployed at a rapid pace. Furthermore, most of the French nationals are senior citizens and this makes it worrisome for us as they are more susceptible to the virus.

“On Sunday evening, a helicopter had to be called in to evacuate one elderly French victim has he developed pulmonary ling infection and also had reported of having this underlying medical problem before. His condition was turning critical.,” the official said.
