Interior Minister Sar Kheng has established a committee for the prevention and control of COVID-19, which he will chair.
An Interior Ministry statement obtained today said the committee will consists of 35 of its senior officials and those from other relevant ministries.
It said the committee aims to plan activities, as instructed by the government and the Ministry of Health, in a bid to prevent and stop the spread of COVID-19.
The committee is tasked with disseminating all preventative instructions to civil servants, police officers and the public as well as to observe and evaluate the implementation of planned activities.
It is also obliged to take any immediate action based on developments related to COVID-19.
Health Ministry spokesman Ly Sovann said today there has been no official announcement from the World Health Organization confirming that there is a drug or vaccine available to combat the virus.
“As of this afternoon March 21, the WHO has not yet approved any drug or vaccine that may prevent the virus. Therefore, people should be careful and avoid wasting money on products that claim to be helpful. Instead, we must continue caring about daily hygiene,” he said.
Mr Sovann noted that some ill-intentioned people have circulated rumours that drugs and vaccines to cure patients infected with COVID-19 have been identified, in a bid to cheat the public for profit.
