Poachers caught in Wildlife Sanctuary

Rangers from Mondulkiri provincial environment department detained a Vietnamese national and sent him to the provincial court over illegal trapping and poaching of wild animals in the province’s Srepok Wildlife Sanctuary.


Keo Sopheak, the director of the provincial Department of Environment, said today the suspect Nguyen Vansi, 50, a resident of Dak Lak Province was arrested at Koh M’yerl Leu village, Nong Khy Leuk commune, Koh Nhek district, Mondulkiri province in Srepok Wildlife Sanctuary while he and other accomplices were committing illegal activities of hunting and catching wild animals using traps.


“The suspect and a few accomplices put traps to catch and kill a peacock. Vansi was arrested and sent to the provincial court, while the others escaped,” he said.

Mondulkiri Provincial Court spokesman Mam Vanda, said today after questioning Vansi, charges of illegally trapping or hunting critically endangered wildlife species under Articles 61 and 56 of the Protected Areas Law were filed.


A report from the provincial environment department stated, since the beginning of the year to the middle of February, more than 10 suspects have been detained by rangers stationed at the protected areas and sent to the provincial court related to forestry crimes.
