Manet: Military a tool for peace and stability

Sun Mesa / Khmer Times Share:

Army Commander Lieutenant General Hun Manet yesterday ordered the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces for the continued preservation of the Kingdom’s peace and stability.

He made this call at the annual meeting with officers at Siem Reap province, which he presided.

Lt Gen Manet commended officers of the Military Region 2 for delivering on their duty to protect peace, stability and public security last year.

“Our priority job is to continue protecting peace and stability for the nation and the people,” he said, adding that these are the core foundations for a country’s development. He also commended their efforts to uplift living conditions of poor families.

In a statement issued yesterday, the army officers were said to have built and repaired more than 200 houses for poverty-stricken citizens.

Lt Gen Manet also praised them for conducting training to help build the capacity of military officers in the region.

“I have seen your work. It shows how all of you are committed to your duties through the order of the government.

“I hope that our military will assess loopholes in last year’s national security to allow for continued progress and efficiency,” he said.

Last year, Defence Minister General Tea Banh called for all military forces to remain loyal to the government amid Sam Rainsy’s call for a military coup.

“We have already decided that they [opposition party] crossed the line. The attempt was led by Sam Rainsy and his allies. We must enforce the law on those people.”

“We have no choice but to prevent a coup and crackdown on activities that aim to incite chaos and compromise the security and peace the nation has fought for,” said Gen Banh.

Kin Phea, the director-general of the International Relations Institute at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said yesterday  the RCAF’s task is to protect the legitimate government and preserve peace and stability for the people.

“The military is a tool used for keeping the country’s peace. It is not a tool for political groups. Calling on the army to stand up against the legitimate government is such a misguided move by the opposition,” he said.
