The Mekong nations and China will focus on the COVID-19 issue during the 5th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Laos this week.

A Foreign Affairs Ministry statement on Saturday said the meeting in Vientiane on Wednesday and Thursday will be attended by foreign ministers from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and China.

“The Special Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on COVID-19 will discuss and exchange views on effective ways to combat the spread of the virus and [Prak] Sokhonn will share Cambodia’s latest information about it, as well as the measures taken to counter its spread in the Kingdom,” it said. The statement said Cambodia supports China and other stakeholders to combat the spread  COVID-19 because it is a global health threat.

Lim Menghour, deputy director of the Mekong Centre for Strategic Studies, said yesterday the Mekong countries and China will focus on finding solutions to combat the outbreak of the virus, which is not only harming health security but also economic activity.

“All the leaders will seek solutions to curb the outbreak of COVID-19 because if China can be affected, then the whole region, including Cambodia, can be affected too,” he added.

Economic growth, regional connectivity, infrastructure and traditional security will be the main issue for dialogue, Mr Menghour added.

“All issues need to have multilateral solutions from the stakeholders because they cannot be solved unilaterally,” he said.

Mr Menghour added that the Mekong River’s water level and flow will be a hot issue during the MLC  meeting.
