Kampong Cham FC tops provincial championship

Kampong Cham FC won the provincial championship in Kampong Cham to lead seven teams from the city and nearby provinces that will compete in the grand finals of Tiger Street Football 2020 in front of English football legend Rio Ferdinand.

Kampong Cham FC overcame a tough challenge from Ptas Laveng Marisa FC to eke out a 2-1 victory in the finals yesterday.

As the provincial champion, Kampong Cham FC received $1,500 and other prizes from the organizer.Ptas Laveng Marisa FC got $1,000, Kok Sar $500, while fourth placer Member Fox A took home $200.

The other three qualifiers from Kampong Cham are King Lion, Justice FT and Nak Pramanh Ty Krung.

This year, five-time champion Inter KPC did not make it to the finals after losing in the preliminary rounds. Inter KPC was heavily favoured to win the provincial championship for the sixth time in a row.

There were 77 teams from Kratie, Stung Treng, Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, Prey Veng and Svay Rieng provinces that joined the Kampong Cham leg of Tiger Street Football 2020. The team turnout this year exceeded that of last year.

Similarly to previous legs of Tiger Street Football 2020, the Kampong Cham stop drew huge crowds that marvelled at the exciting and high-energy matches. The stands and surrounding areas were full to the brim. More than a thousand locals and foreigners watched the games in the arena.

The fan turnout is estimated to be greater than in the previous years. The Kampong Cham leg of Tiger Street Football 2020 was held from Feb 8-9.

In addition to the games, the spectators were also treated to a series of musical performances by top artists, including Chhin Manich, Zono, Sokun Nisa, Chhay Virakyuth, Maily and Preap Sovath.

The game between King Lion and Member Fox A was particularly exciting, with both teams aggressive from the get-go. Despite numerous and persistent attacks, the goalkeepers from both sides guarded well and managed to stop their opponents from scoring, until late in the first half when a determined effort from the players of Member Fox A netted the team a goal.

In Tiger Street Football, matches are played in two six-minute halves. Each team has four players on the pitch at all times, including the goalkeeper.

Before coming to Kampong Cham, Tiger Street Football 2020, which is the most-anticipated football tournament in the Kingdom, stopped off in Kampong Speu, Poipet, Battambang and Siem Reap.

There are now 41 teams that have qualified for the grand finals. The tournament moves next to Kampot where six qualifying slots are up for grabs. From Kampot, it will proceed to Takeo. There are five qualifying slots reserved for Takeo and surrounding provinces.

The final leg will be held in Phnom Penh with 12 slots up for grabs.

There are 64 teams that will qualify for the grand finals from eight cities and provinces in the Kingdom. The grand finals will be held at Koh Pich (Diamond Island) in Phnom Penh from Feb 29-March 1.

Now in its eighth year, Tiger Street Football is intended to further promote and develop football in Cambodia. The tournament gives young football talents a venue to showcase and improve their talents under the expert guidance of veteran players and coaches.

In every tournament, the organizer has brought in a famous name to add another level of excitement to the grand finals. This year, it will be Rio Ferdinand who will pay a visit to Cambodia to headline the closing games and meet legions of football fans.

The finale will be a star-studded event that is expected to draw thousands of football fans, not only from Phnom Penh but also other parts of Cambodia. Football is the nation’s number-one sport and has a very large following in the Kingdom.

In addition to several meet-and-greets with fans, Ferdinand will also take the time to meet with players from the 64 finalists and also with other football players in the Kingdom. Visits to futsal pitches and media briefings are also part of his itinerary.

Alongside the football matches, Tiger Street Football 2020 also features special promotions, cheerleading and other fun activities to keep everyone entertained.

The tournament came back to Cambodia last month after successful tours in other parts of Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Malaysia and Myanmar.
