Foreign Affairs Minister Prak Sokhonn has called on his officials to be well prepared so that the Asia Europe meeting slated to be held in Phnom Penh in November, could go smoothly.
Speaking to about 200 officials at the ministry today, Mr Sokhonn said that the Kingdom needs to be ready to host the ASEM in which heads of states from 51 countries will participate between 16 and 17 November.
“It is the great honor for Cambodia to host this important meeting but we need to do a lot of preparation to host it,” he said.
He said that the meeting was first planned to be held in Siem Reap province but Siem Reap International airport could not accommodate 50 air planes.
According to Mr Sokhonn, the government will work with the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation to host the meeting in new exhibition centre in Phnom Penh’s Chroy Changva Satellite City.
He said that the Kingdom needs to prepare a lot of things, especially logistics and security.
“It is the opportunity for Cambodia to showcase. That’s why we need to do a lot of thing,” he added. “It is the first time for Cambodia to host the meeting so we need to be well prepared.”
The ASEM is an intergovernmental process established in 1996 to foster dialogue and cooperation between Asia and Europe.
It comprises 53 partners: 30 European and 21 Asian countries, the European Union and the Asean secretariat. It addresses political, economic, social, cultural, and educational issues of common interest.
