Qatar Airways has announced a new route between Doha, Qatar, and Siem Reap with the scheduled service to commence in November this year.

The new Doha to Siem Reap route is the second flight that Qatar Airways operates in Cambodia, meaning the airline will have two liaisons, one linking Doha to Phnom Penh and the new one between Doha and Siem Reap.

The route will initially be running five times per week according to the Cambodia Airports statement released yesterday.

The new route will keep increasing tourists who visit the home of the Angkor Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Cambodia Airports said.

“The new service will contribute in re-boosting the Siem Reap destination by further improving connectivity and providing passengers with more travel options,” Alain Brun, CEO of Cambodia Airports, said in the press release.

Tourism Ministry’s spokesman Top Sopheak applauded the new route, saying that it will give more options for tourists to travel to Siem Reap.

“It is good for new tourism and it is in line with the Ministry of Tourism’s policy to keep attracting tourists. We want to have many flight routes which contribute to facilitating tourist travel,” Sopheak said.

The three international airports across Cambodia sill should expect growth in 2020, but perhaps at a slower pace, stated Khek Norinda, PR and Communication Director at Cambodia Airports.

“We are finalising the consolidation of our figures but for all our airports combined we were just shy of hitting the 12 million passenger figure,” Norinda said to Khmer Times.

According to the primary report from the Tourism Ministry, 6.7 million foreign tourists visited Cambodia in 2019, an 8 per cent increase from the previous year.

Sopheak said Chinese tourists still toped the country’s tourism market list during this period.

The number of foreign tourists visiting Angkor Wat declined in 2019 this is because a number of Chinese tourists decided to visit the country’s coastal areas.

“Although the total number of foreign tourists declined in Siem Reap during 2019, the growth of foreign tourist arrivals to Cambodia still grew, meaning that foreign tourists chose other tourism destinations inside the country,” Sopheak said.
