A Royal Cambodian Armed Forces officer has been charged in connection with a shooting at a nightclub in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district last Friday night.

Touch Bopheap, 35, was yesterday charged with unauthorised weapon possession by prosecutors at Phnom Penh Municipal Court and faces between six months and three years in prison if convicted.

He is accused of drunkenly firing ten bullets into the air outside the Entertainment 555 club in Chaktomok commune at about 10:30pm.

Earlier that evening, Mr Bopheap had driven to the club in his Lexus and spent several hours drinking with friends.

His group got into an argument with another group and Mr Bopheap stormed outside the club, firing into the air in anger before fleeing in his car.

Police were able to identify him from CCTV footage and witness evidence.

Municipal military police officer Ly Kong said the suspect was arrested yesterday after handing himself in following a court summons.
