Commune, district and provincial police have been deployed to hunt for a suspect accused of murdering two men and stealing a motorbike yesterday morning in Battambang province.
National Police identified the victims as motorbike brokers Hout Chhoeung, 45, and Rithy, 35.
Mr Chhoeung died after being shot in the ribs while Mr Rithy was killed by an axe wound to his head.
Mey Kimsan, serious crime chief at Bavel district police, said the suspect made off with a motorbike following the attack.
“We believe this was a robbery, but it is still under investigation. The only thing that was stolen was the motorbike. The victims had money in their pockets but he did not take it,” Mr Kimsan said.
“One man fired the deadly shots using an AK-47, but we still do not know how many people were involved in the whole plot.”
An elderly man witnessed the crime and reported it to police.
“The witness could not remember the face of the murderer but said he was in his twenties,” Mr Kimsan said.
“He saw the suspect ambush the victims on a quiet road near a rice field, about two kilometres from Khnach Romeas commune.”
He added that officers are searching a large area in a bid to find the suspect, including forests.
