A 43-year-old woman was arrested in Phnom Penh yesterday for allegedly beating her husband and slashing his genitals with a knife last week over a suspected love affair, according to commune police.
Second Lieutenant Kong Seng, a penal police officer in Stung Meanchey commune, said the incident happened at the couple’s rented room in Prek Toal village in Meanchey district’s Stung Meanchey commune on Friday afternoon.
He said the suspect was Yen Srey Mao and the victim was 37-year-old Um Vun, both of whom were scavengers at the Stung Meanchey garbage dump. He added that they had a six-year-old daughter.
Before the violence, the couple had an argument and Ms. Srey Mao flew into a jealous rage because she suspected her husband was having an affair with a younger woman in the village, Sec. Lt. Seng added.
“She got very angry with her younger husband because he connected with a younger girl in the village and betrayed her,” he said.
“She then took a stone and beat his head many times, causing him serious injury. At the same time, she took a knife and cut his penis and testicles, causing serious injuries that required 17 stitches.”
The man was later rescued by neighbors and sent to a hospital for treatment in Phnom Penh, Sec. Lt. Seng said, adding that his wounds had not affected the functionality of his genitalia.
Mr. Vun stayed in the hospital for three days and after his recovery, he went directly to local police on Monday to file a complaint against his wife, the police officer added.
He said that in this case, the wife was accused of “an intentional act of violence with aggravating circumstances” and is now being temporarily detained for questioning at the Meanchey district police station.
