A man in Kampong Thom province on Tuesday stabbed his wife dead before he took his own life, leaving behind their one-year-old son, according to police.
Lieutenant Colonel Ke Kanhchana, Baray district’s deputy police chief, yesterday identified the man as Sun Sokhan, 38.
He said Mr Sokhan killed his wife, Mom Sokna, 22, in their house in Baray district’s Chong Doung commune.
Lt Col Kanhchana noted that the couple had a one-year-old son together, who is now orphaned.
He added that Mr Sokhan and Ms Sokna were beverage vendors.
Lt Col Kanhchana noted that at about 9.30pm on Tuesday, neighbours heard the couple arguing but chose to ignore the commotion, adding that the victim was even heard shouting for help.
He said the neighbours did not help because they were used to hearing the couple argue almost every day.
On Wednesday, neighbours found Mr Sokhan and Ms Sokna’s bodies inside their house and reported it to police, who proceeded to investigate.
“On August 21, they were found dead inside the house, where the woman was stabbed while the man hanged himself,” he said.
According to police investigation, Mr Sokhan was a drug user and often argued with his wife, who disapproved of his substance abuse habits.
“She always told her husband not to use drugs because it costs a lot of money,” Lt Col Kahnchana said. “He was advised not to use drugs, but he never followed her advice.”
Lt Col Kahnchana said Mr Sokhan killed his wife by stabbing her with a knife multiple times, including on her head, ears and hands.
He added that after killing his wife, Mr Sokhan hanged himself.
