A woman in Preah Sihanouk province killed her husband and daughter with poison, before ingesting the same substance herself, according to police.

Major General Chuon Narin, provincial police chief, said the woman was Moeng Sophal, a 41-year-old hairdresser, who later died in hospital.

He added that the victims were Ly Kheng, Ms Sophal’s 43-year-old husband, and Ly Sivchhing, their 12-year-old daughter. Both were found dead in their rental house in Sihanoukville on Tuesday.

Maj Gen Narin said the murder took place at about 8pm, when Ms Sophal mixed poison into food she gave her husband and daughter. She later ingested the same substance and died in hospital, he added.

“According to police investigation, we found that the wife had an argument with her husband,” Maj Gen Narin said. “She then poisoned her husband and daughter, killing them.”

“After poisoning them, she locked the door to the house and committed suicide by taking the poison herself. She died in hospital after she was rescued by police officers,” he added. “Experts from the provincial police are still investigating on where she obtained the poison from.”

Captain Sok Vichet, an officer with Sihanoukville police, said a neighbour, Yann Sophon, 65, alerted commune police on Tuesday evening after she saw Mr Kheng and the couple’s daughter dead in their house.

He added that police then went to inspect the house, where they saw the two victims’ bodies.

Cap Vichet said officers and relatives of the victims attempted to push open the door.

“When we opened the door, we found the husband and daughter already dead,” he said. “But the wife, who took the poison, was still alive.”

“Police then rescued her and sent her to hospital. However, doctors could not help her and she later died,” Cap Vichet said.

He added that police have handed over the bodies to their relatives for a funeral.
