Sbek Thom or Khmer Shadow Theatre is the oldest theater among many forms of theater in Cambodia. Sbek Thom features two metres high, made of cow leather. It emerged in the Kingdom before the Angkor era. This oldest form of art featuring only the epic story of Ramayana (and Mahabharata are the two epics of India). It was inscribed to Unesco’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. The performance is organized at night time where Cambodians celebrate special ceremonies such as the King’s birthday and religious ceremony. In preservation of the oldest art form, you can watch live performance of Sbek Thom at Sovannaphum Arts Association on every Friday and Saturday night (7pm-8pm).
