PHNOM PENH, July 23 (Xinhua) — The annual gems and jewelry fair kicked off here on Thursday, aiming to promote Cambodia’s fledgling precious stones and jewelry industry, officials said.
Held at the capital’s Diamond Island Exhibition Center, the four-day event brought together 54 exhibitors from Cambodia, China ‘s Hong Kong and Macao, Britain, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and the United States, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An said.
“The exhibition is a good chance for manufacturers and traders to display their products and for customers to seek products they want,” she said at the opening ceremony.
“It is also a platform to show Cambodia’s gems and jewelry to international buyers and to bring international gemstones and fine jewelry designs to Cambodian customers.”
According to Men Sam An, gems and jewelry trade volume between Cambodia and other countries was estimated at nearly 100 million U. S. dollars in 2013.
“This amount is still relatively small if compared to Vietnam, which was 1.12 billion U.S. dollars, and Thailand, which was up to nearly 24 billion U.S. dollars,” she said.
Lim Chhiv Ho, chairwoman of the Cambodian Gems and Jewelry Traders Association, said the event was not only to sell gems and jewelry, but also to attract foreign business people to Cambodia.
At the event, there was also a gems and jewelry fashion show.
