A total of 56 Cambodian athletes, coaches, and delegates are representing the kingdom in Indonesia at the 11th ASEAN Schools Games which is taking place between July 17-25 in Semarang, Central Java.
The weeklong 11th ASEAN Schools Games officially got underway last Thursday with an opening ceremony held at Holy Terang Bangsa School Stadium in Semarang.
Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi said the country was honoured to host the event.
“It is truly an honour that the ASEAN School Sports Council entrusted Indonesia with the hosting duties for this year’s edition,” he said during the opening ceremony.
It is the first time that Central Java is hosting the event after Surabaya hosted in 2012.
On the sidelines of the event, Sar Sokha, Secretary of State for Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport has been selected to chair the regional ASEAN Students Sports Council (ASSC) for its 2020-2021 term.
The nomination came at the Technical Committee Meeting of the 73rd ASEAN School Sports Council.
Mr. Sokha, President of Cambodian Student Sports Federation, replaces the under-secretary of state at the Ministry of Education of Brunei.
The ASEAN Schools Games is an annual sporting event which aims to enhance friendship among students around the Southeast Asian region. It also seeks to promote ASEAN solidarity among the youth through school sports and provide opportunities for school athletes to engage in cultural exchange.
ASG 2018 brought together 1,500 students from 10 countries from the region competing in 11 different sports; artistic gymnastics, athletics, badminton, basketball, netball, rhythmic gymnastics, sepaktakraw, squash, swimming, table tennis and volleyball.
At the last event, there were 100 plus events.
