A man was killed in Preah Sihanouk province on Saturday after a gas tank he was delivering to a customer fell, hit the ground and exploded.

The incident occurred at about 3.30pm in Stung Hav district’s Tumnop Rolok commune.

Major Ka Sarann, deputy chief of district police, identified the victim as 30-year-old Pot Sophath, a worker for a gas company.

Maj Sarann said Mr Sophath and his colleagues were delivering 10 gas tanks to customers in the commune when the explosion took place.

“As they were carrying the gas tanks from their car, one was dropped and it exploded after it hit the ground – the explosion was loud and it sounded like a bomb,” Maj Sarann said. “During the incident, pieces of metal from the tank hit Mr Sophath’s stomach and neck, causing him to be decapitated.”

“His head flew 100 metres,” he added. “The other two workers, who were nearby, did not get injured.”

He noted police officers nearby heard the explosion and immediately went to the scene.

District police chief Colonel Ros Key said the explosion took place because the gas tank was not in a good condition.

“According to our investigation, the owner of the gas company was using old tanks,” Col Key said. “Some of them were very old and rusty.”

“It was very dangerous because old tanks are prone to exploding by themselves, even if they’re not hit by a hard object,” he added.

Col Key said in order to prevent another incident, gas company owners and customers must be careful when using gas tanks, especially ones that are old and rusty.

He noted that the body of the victim was handed to his family for a funeral, while the owner of the gas company compensated his family and paid for the funeral.
