‘Cambodia and Indonesia is important partner in building and maintaining security in the region. The friendship modalities of the two countries are also playing role in assuring the current peace and stability’, said the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, Ryamizard Ryacudu, during his official visit to Cambodia (13/07/2019) for inaugurating the re-allocation the Indonesia-Cambodia Friendship Monument in Baray Santuk District, Kampong Thom Province, Cambodia.
Minister Ryamizard was amazed with the conditions in Kampong Thom, which now have turned into a modern, advanced and peaceful area, far different from when he served in the area about 27 years ago as the Commander of the Garuda XII-B Contingent, part of the UNTAC peacekeeping forces mission. The Indonesian Minister of Defense expressed his highest appreciation to all elements of the Kingdom of Cambodia, including the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Phnom Penh for their solid efforts in re-allocating and rebuilding the Friendship Monument to a better, beautiful and strategic location. He also hopes that the good relations between the two countries can continue to flourish. The Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Defense which was signed in 2017 is expected to be fully implemented and can expand concrete and beneficial cooperation in various fields, including Army to Army Talk, joint training, capacity building programs, and mutual exchange of visits.
The relationship between Indonesia and Cambodia has been historically established for a long time by the Founding Fathers, President Soekarno and King Norodom Sihanouk’s. Indonesia took part in the peace process in Cambodia, including in facilitating the Informal Meeting (JIM) I in Bogor (5 -28 July 1988) and JIM II in Jakarta (19-21 February 1989), until the achievement of the Paris Peace Agreement in 1991 as well as in sending 3,957 Garuda contingent troops to Cambodia in 1992-1993.
General Chieng Am, Vice Minister of Defense of the Kingdom of Cambodia said that the Friendship Monument was established to memorize Indonesian role in supporting peace process in Cambodia. The monument also reflects close cooperation between the two countries.
