Two miners died from smoke inhalation on Tuesday night in Kratie province’s Sambor district and officials said yesterday that four people have been detained for questioning.

District police chief Bun Chhoeun told Khmer Times yesterday that the men went down into the gold mine pit to shut off a generator, but died after suffocating on the generator’s fumes.

“The victims were workers for a mine excavation project which belongs to a Chinese company. Provincial military police officials went down and detained four people for questioning,” he said.

Mr. Chhoeun said the two victims were removed from the mine and their bodies would be sent to their families.

They were identified as 30-year-old Khun Nak and Yem Kemyuth, 27.

Deputy provincial military police chief Mao Rainny told Khmer Times yesterday that his officials were investigating the case.

“I do not have detailed information yet, but our officials and relevant officials are on it,” he said, adding that they were working on the case carefully as to not spread false information.

Provincial mine department officials could not be reached for comment yesterday.
