PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – The Vietnamese government has ordered its officials to investigate alleged encroachment into Cambodia in Ratanakkiri and Kandal provinces, according to Cambodia’s Foreign Ministry.

It said Vietnam’s deputy foreign minister had responded to complaints from Cambodia about the issue when its deputy foreign minister, Le Hoai Trung, met Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong after the ASEAN-Japan Forum in Phnom Penh on Tuesday.

Mr. Le Hoai Trung said Hanoi ordered local officials to report on the disputes after it received diplomatic notes from Cambodia last week rebuking it for failing to live up to bilateral agreements designating disputed land as off limit to both sides until it is demarcated.

Hanoi is waiting for reports from local officials, the diplomat added.

Mr. Namhong raised two cases of alleged encroachment. One was the digging of ponds in Ratanakkiri province and the other is the construction of a military post on disputed land along the border in Kandal province.

Mr. Namhong also repeated the government’s demand that Vietnam halt all construction on land not yet demarcated.
