Smart Axiata Funds Degrees for Students

Mayuri Mei Lin / Khmer Times Share:

Ten students will have the opportunity to further their studies for free thanks to Smart Axiata’s SmartEdu Scholarship Program, which not only covers their entire tertiary education tuition, but has also awarded them a monthly stipend amounting to $15,000 for the duration of their degree.

The scholarship, aimed at assisting underprivileged students across Cambodia, was awarded on Wednesday in the presence of Education, Youth and Sport Minister Hang Chuon Naron and Thomas Hundt, the chief executive officer of Smart Axiata.

“There are many high school students who wish to pursue higher education but don’t have the financial means,” Mr. Chuon Naron was quoted as saying in a press statement.

“[The ministry] is always pleased when companies like Smart Axiata take the initiative to provide motivated high school students with this excellent opportunity through a generous scholarship that will allow them to achieve their goals and dreams.”

Students across the Kingdom who scored a minimum B grade on their grade 12 exam were eligible to apply for the scholarship. Of the hundreds of applicants, a panel formed by Smart and the ministry, which included an independent member from the education sector, shortlisted it to only 10 candidates.

The winners – hailing from Phnom Penh and the provinces of Siem Reap, Battambang, Preah Sihanouk, Prey Veng, Kampong Chhnang and Kampot – will now be able to attend any public university for free to pursue a degree of their choice.

Beyond just assisting underprivileged students, Mr. Hundt added that the scholarship program was also aimed at developing the Kingdom as a whole.

“We want to make [a] positive impact on Cambodia’s younger generation and to give them the tools to influence the future of the nation,” he said.
