Tboung Khmum Provincial Court yesterday charged a 23-year-old man for killing his 17-year-old wife who he hacked to death with a cleaver during an argument.

The murder took place at about 1.30pm on Friday near a commune police post in Chirou II commune, in the province’s Tboung Khmum district.

Major Seng Sophath, district deputy police chief, identified the accused as Preab Mai, a 23-year-old farmer living in Chirou II commune, in Tbong Khmum district.

The victim was identified as 17-year-old Choum Theary. Mr Mai and Ms Theary married last year.

Maj Sophath said the accused yesterday was charged with intentional murder and faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted. He is currently in pre-trial detention following his arrest on Saturday.

Maj Sophath said that Mr Mai and Ms Theary often argued, leading to Ms Theary leaving their home to stay at her parents’ house for a week before returning to her husband.

Maj Sophath said that the couple got into an argument on the day of the victim’s murder. After the argument, Ms Theary left the house to walk to her parents’ house, which is located about 200 metres away.

Maj Sophath noted that while the victim was walking, Mr Mai, who was angry with his wife, took a cleaver and ran to her before hacking her from behind until she died.

“He was angry with his wife, who often left him to live with her family every time they got into an argument,” Maj Sophath said. “He then hacked her at least five times until she died on the spot.”

Maj Sophath noted that Mr Mai confessed to attempting suicide by hanging after he killed the victim. However, he noted that the string broke when the he jumped off to hang and failed to commit suicide.

Maj Sophath added that the accused was arrested at about 6.30pm on Saturday in his house.
