Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Friday charged and detained a military officer accused of shooting and injuring his ex-girlfriend in a jealous rage last month.
Deputy prosecutor Soeu Vanny identified the accused as Vin Sokphanha, a 27-year-old soldier living in Veal Vong commune in Phnom Penh’s Prampi Makara district.
Ms Vanny said that the accused was charged with attempted murder and faces between 10 to 15 years in jail if convicted. He is now in pre-trial detention.
Captain Ly Sopheak, a municipal military police officer, said that in 2016, the accused was in a relationship with victim Nim Linna, 29, a make-up product vendor living in Tuol Svay Prey I commune in Phnom Penh’s Chamkar Mon district.
Cap Sopheak added that the couple ended their relationship in May following an argument, noting that the victim stopped contacting the accused after they broke up.
Cap Sopheak said that at about 2.30am on May 28, the accused shot the victim as she was sitting and having a drink with another man at the Luxury Entertainment Club in Prampi Makara district’s Boeng Raing commune.
“He was angry with the victim because she was with another man and drinking with him at the club,” Cap Sopheak said. “He then fired three bullets at the floor near her legs to threaten her.”
“However, one of the three bullets hit her thigh and seriously injured her,” he added. “He fled after the shooting and the victim was rescued by her friend and local police, and she was immediately sent to a hospital for treatment.”
Cap Sopheak said the accused was arrested on May 29 after military police identified him from a CCTV footage, of which a still image was widely published in the media.
He noted that the accused was brought in by his mother, adding that Mr Sokphanha confessed about the shooting to military police. After his arrest, police seized a gun along with six unused bullets from him.
The victim is still receiving treatment for her injuries at the hospital.
