Cambodia’s national team head coach Felix Agustín Gonzalez Dalmas has been entertaining fans questions in a live video Q&A on the Football Federation of Cambodia’s official social media channel.
Cambodia face Pakistan next Thursday for the first match of their Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 1 of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 & Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers and Dalmas said he and general manager Keisuke Honda were ready to lead the kingdom in their quest for the second round.
Asked whether Cambodia had enough time to prepare for the opener, Dalmas conceded that timing was not ideal but that the team would manage expectations.
“Officially, the FIFA break is on June 3rd and the league only ends [it’s matchweek] on the 2nd., said the Argentinian. “We are trying [to create] a good relationship with the clubs. We don’t want to take good players from the clubs that are fighting for the league [title] at this time.”
Cambodia have only three days between departing their club teams and the national team match against Pakistan on June 6.
“We are in touch with the players, and they know what we expect. We have short time to prepare,” he added.
Observers from around the world reacted with a mixture of astonishment and bemusement after Honda was unveiled as Cambodia’s general manager last August. He was handed a two-year unpaid contract and also serves as cultural ambassador, highlighting the natural beauty of the kingdom.
However, due to his lack of suitable coaching licences and playing commitments, the role of head coach was be taken up by Dalmas with Honda acting as GM.
In March 2015, Cambodia defeated Macau 4-1 on aggregate over two legs to gain a place in the second round of qualifiers.
Coach Dalmas and GM Honda are expected to release the squad list for the Pakistan double-header on Sunday.
