The global international political group Centrist Democrats International has urged the European Union to treat Cambodia fairly when evaluating the special trade status under the EU’s Everything-but-arms scheme.

The global organisation widely known as IDC-CDI said in its release that the EBA has contributed significantly to the economic foundation in Cambodia.

“We suggest the EU to act accordingly with regards to the decision on whether to remove EBA from Cambodia. Cambodians have suffered enough; they deserve to live in peace, with prosperity and happiness”, it said. “We wish to see democracy in Cambodia  thrive and consolidating the economy, with the understanding and support of the international community.”

The IDC-CDI noted that Cambodia is a post-conflict and least-developed country that has benefitted from preferential trade status.

“We took note with satisfaction of the Cambodian Government’s efforts to implement the EU’s demands and conditions, including 15 conventions under the frameworks of the United Nations and International Labor Organization corresponding to the expansion of political and economic development, labour rights as well as freedom space in Cambodia,” it said.
