Provincial anti-drug police in Battambang province on Friday arrested three people suspected of drug trafficking.

Major Kim Sreang, deputy chief of Phnom Proek district police, identified the suspects as 35-year-old Kheng Phalla, 36-year-old Phloeung Yong and, his wife, 24-year-old Vath Vongreaksmey. The suspects are from Pichr Chenda commune in Battambang province’s Phnom Proek district.

Maj Sreang noted that at about 12.30pm on Friday, Mr Yong and his wife traveled on a motorbike to buy drugs from Mr Phalla. The drugs were intended for an undercover police officer in a transaction planned to take place in O’Thmey village, which is located near the Thai border.

“During the transaction, our police officers, who were standing by, proceeded to surround them and arrest them as they held the evidence,” Maj Sreang said. “Following their arrest, police seized five packages of methamphetamine, which contained 1,800 pills branded ‘W.Y’ and weighed almost half a kilo in total, along with one phone and one motorbike from them.”

Maj Sreang said that the confessions of Mr Yong and Ms Vath led to the arrest of Mr Phalla, who is identified as the ringleader, at about 4pm on Friday. Police, however, did not seize any drugs from Mr Phalla.

Colonel Kuy Heang, chief of provincial anti-drug department in Battambang province, yesterday said that the three have been accused with drug trafficking, adding that they are currently in pre-trial detention.
