An American man in detention on drug charges died at the Preah Sihanouk provincial hospital after being sent there for treatment, an official said.

Preah Sihanouk provincial prison director Som Sophal declined to comment on the man’s death.

An official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Khmer Times yesterday said 52-year-old Mikhail Grafman died on Friday, a day after being sent to the provincial referral hospital for treatment.

“He died at about 1:15pm, suffering from chronic renal failure,” the official said.

Mr. Grafman was arrested along with four other foreign nationals on December 25 in Sihanoukville for allegedly trafficking and producing the drug ecstasy. They have since been in prison awaiting trial.
