A Cambodian fighter will headline a World Lethwei Championship (WLC) event on Sunday, facing off against legendary WLC veteran Mite Yine in Myanmar’s Kayin State.
Cambodian Top Team (CTT) fighter Morn “Elbow King” Samet steps up to replace Shahmarzade Amil in the main event at WLC Karen Spirit.
Samet, who has competed internationally in Muay Thai, said he was thrilled to get the chance to represent Cambodian martial arts on the international stage.
“I am so excited to get this opportunity to be the first Cambodian to headline a World Lethwei Championship event, said the Kun Khmer exponent. “My opponent has a very exciting style but my aggressive style and my elbows will make it a problem for his headbutts. It is a good match up and fight fans from all over the world will love this fight,” he added.
His opponent Yine, a two-time Golden Belt winner and 2013 SEA Games Muay Thai gold medalist, is recognised as one of the biggest names in the sport. He will be eager to deliver glory in his home state.
“For the first time, World Lethwei Championship will be in Kayin State, Myanmar, said Yine. “Kayin State is historic for Lethwei as it is embedded in the culture of the Kayin people. I get to main event this fight card against Morn Samet is a big honour so I will show the best of myself and for Kayin people.”
Gerald Ng. CEO of WLC, stated: “For World Lethwei Championship’s first event in Kayin State, we have an epic main event. Mite Yine is beloved by fans of Lethwei for his style of fighting, he said.
“He does not know how to put on a boring fight and he has been in “fight of the year” two years running now. Morn Samet’s style is perfect for lethwei. He keeps walking forward and he throws crazy elbows. This guy is like a terminator. It will be amazing and fight fans in Cambodia, Myanmar and around the world will be treated to an absolute spectacle this Sunday!”
In the co-main event, former Myanmar Light Welterweight National Championship Kyaw Zin Latt takes on German-Thai Burutlek Petchyindee Academy.
World Lethwei Championship’s “Karen Spirit” gets underway on Sunday at the Chitthu Myaing Park at Hpa An, Karen State and will broadcast live on Canal+ and UFC Fight Pass.
