Sankranta festivities finished

The Sankranta festivities (Khmer New Year) in the provinces were very well attended, very successful, and without negative incidents of any magnitude.

The Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC) in Prey Veng Province reported that 319.200 visitors came to celebrate Khmer New Year there. The hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and vendors were very pleased with the increase in business and revenue.

Sar Sokha, a vice president of the UYFC said that youth groups and provincial authorities were prepared for the big event. “We are proud to have made it happen successfully and safely … and I thank the work groups who prepared it well,” he said.

In Sihanoukville Province more than 200.000 visitors, local and foreign, came to visit the city, the beaches, the islands, and especially to see the Sankranta event at sea. Provincial authorities saw an increase in KNY attendance by over 26 percent compared to 2018.

Yun Min, Governor of Preah Sihanouk Province, thanked “… those officials who managed the preparations for Sankrantra by the beautiful sea, and the many tourist who came here [Sihanouk Province].”

Battambang Province had some 950.000 visitors, from within the province and from without, for the four days of Sankranta. Governor Ngoun Ratanak praised the safe and fruitul conclusion of the festival,  and that “… people came to visit [B’bang] in numbers well beyond our expectations. Many, many people came to join in the fest.”

Sankrantra in Siem Reap Province had 370.000 visitors. The three-day event incorporated religious programs, artistic performances, traditional dances, and popular games, all of which were welcomed and enjoyed by local and international tourists alike..
