Police from the Interior Ministry’s Anti-Drug Trafficking Department, in collaboration with provincial anti-drug trafficking police, on Sunday arrested an Indonesian national who allegedly transported more than five kilograms of crystal meth from Laos into the Kingdom via the border checkpoint in Stung Treng province.

Major Sok Vichetr, an Anti-Drug Trafficking Department police officer, yesterday identified the suspect as Nurul Fadli Putro.

He said that at about 12.30pm on Sunday, Mr Nurul Fadli, carrying a big suitcase, entered the country from Laos through the Trapaing Kriel Border Checkpoint in Stung Treng city’s Samakki commune.

Maj Vichetr said that police inspected the suitcase at the checkpoint.

“Upon inspecting his suitcase, police found 44 packages of crystal methamphetamine [weighing more than five kilograms] which were hidden in cakes and coffee packets,” he said. “Police arrested him red-handed and seized the drugs.”

Maj Vichetr added that after his arrest, Mr Nurul Fadli was sent to the provincial anti-drug trafficking department for questioning.

Colonel San Nimol, provincial anti-drug trafficking department chief, yesterday said the suspect is still temporarily detained for further investigations.

He said police have accused him of drug trafficking and he faces life in prison if convicted.

“Police are still working on this case,” Col Nimol said. “We will send him to court after we complete our investigations.”
