Battambang Provincial Court yesterday charged a woman who allegedly hacked her husband dead over an extra-marital affair in Ratanak Mondul district on Friday.

The murder took place at about 10.30pm on Friday at the couple’s house in Sdao commune’s Sdao village.

Major General Cheth Vanny, provincial deputy police chief, identified the accused as Var Soknorn, 42, and the victim as Yi Rann, 44, both farmers. The couple married in 2003 and did not have any children.

Maj Gen Vanny said that Ms Soknorn was charged with premeditated murder and faces a life sentence if convicted. She was arrested by district police on Friday and is now in prison pending trial.

Major Chuob Sothea, district deputy police chief, said that according to investigations, Mr Rann in February began an affair with a 38-year-old widow living in the village.

He said Ms Soknorn came to know about the affair and the couple always had arguments over it.

Maj Sothea noted that the arguments always resulted in Mr Rann beating the accused, but she did not complain to police.

He said that on the day of the murder, Mr Rann had returned home after meeting and drinking with his mistress and went to sleep because he was drunk.

Maj Sothea said that while the victim was asleep, Ms Soknorn took an axe and hacked him six times, killing him.

“During her interrogation, the accused confessed to killing the victim because she was angry with him over the affair and for always beating her,” he said. “She plotted to kill him when he was drunk and asleep.”

“She hacked him six times on his forehead and head and killed him,” Maj Sothea added.

He said that after killing her husband, Ms Soknorn fled the house but was arrested by commune police at around midnight following a complaint from a neighbour who witnessed the murder.

Maj Sothea added that after the arrest, police seized an axe from her.
