Prime Minister Hun Sen on Friday, March 22, mentioned in his speech at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Phnom Penh- Sihanoukville Expressway that Cambodia would host the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

In reference to the new thoroughfare Hun Sen said that he hoped the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville expressway, scheduled to be finished in March 2023, would serve the SEA Games, as some competitions will be held in the coastal area of Sihanoukville.

He has scheduled the games for March, well before the national election, and justified this by saying “Why are the SEA games scheduled in March 2023? It’s because we’ll have the national election in July. After the election, perhaps some problems might become apparent, so we need time … to prepare for the election and the creation of new government.”

The 2023 SEA Games will be held in Phnom Penh, at the National Sports Complex located in the development area of Ly Yong Phat, in the Chroy Changvar district.

The government is set to spend about $400 million on the games, including building an Olympic-style facility, the Morodok Techo National Sports Complex.

The SEA Games 2023 are expected to bring the Kingdom prestige and celebrity on the international stage, along with economic and social benefits.
