Prime Minister Hun Sen today said he wants the constitution amended to allow the death sentence for child rapists.
“I want an initiative to have the constitution amended to allow for the death sentence for anyone who rapes underage children, such as a father raping his children, a grandfather raping his grandchildren, or an uncle raping his nieces,” Mr Hun Sen said.
Mr Hun Sen said that he will not send the request to the National Assembly or King Norodom Sihamoni directly, and instead wants to see a people’s referendum.
He said that child rapists cannot be forgiven.
“I hope this warning message will alert you,” he said. “If such cases are still happening, an amendment to the constitution will be made. Establishment of the death penalty could be dealt through a referendum because I want to crack down on beasts in our society.”
Cambodia abolished the death penalty in 1989.
