Vietnam is a country that understands the value of peace based on its long history of struggle. In the era of international integration, Vietnam’s foreign policy is to make friends with all countries in the world, irrespective of their political regime and religion. Vietnam’s foreign policy has become a bright spot of focus when it became a country that plays an important role in Asean and the international community.
The best evidence of this is the trust placed on the country by international friends in choosing Vietnam as the host country for the second US-North Korea Summit which begins tomorrow. This historical summit in Vietnam gives hope for peace in the region and the world.
According to Pham Quang Vinh, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Ambassador of Vietnam in the US, Vietnam was chosen as the venue for this US-North Korea Summit for the following reasons: Vietnam is a trusted country; Vietnam is highly symbolic of peace and all have found that when they come to Vietnam their concerns are met.
He said: “Of course, the choice of location is decided by the parties; but the fact that Vietnam was chosen shows the prestige of Vietnam, which is a certification mark that Vietnam has sufficient facilities in logistics and has met security conditions for a major event.
“Vietnam as a venue is also highly symbolic as it acknowledges the process of Doi Moi (renewal) after the war for reconciliation, opening-up, developing, moving forward and innovating the country. The choice of Vietnam as a place for the Summit actually shows that Vietnam is now very different.”
Mr Vinh also emphasized: “For a very long time, the world saw Vietnam as a country at war. But now, Vietnam is an integrated country and a nation.”
“The choice of Vietnam is not only because it’s a convenient location. It’s more than that. Vietnam has a role to play in contributing to regional and global peace and stability,” he added.
The issue of the Korean peninsula is really a difficult story that has lasted for seven decades. It is not only a concern for the US and North Korea but for the whole world. However, from the first meeting to the present, both sides have had enough faith to continue to choose Vietnam as a place for the second summit.
The fact that the parties still have faith in dialogue and diplomacy to solve the problem is a good sign and a breakthrough. Therefore, Vietnam is truly a hopeful destination of peace for a long-standing problem in the world. If in the past, Vietnam was an inspirational image of a resilient people, then Vietnam has once again brought an inspiring image of a self-sustaining, open-minded nation that really has contributed to many aspects of peace and stability in the region and world.
With the credible position of Vietnam as a venue and with the moves from the parties, we have faith to expect the success of the Second Summit between the US and North Korea in Hanoi.
