A pair of Cambodian fighters will represent the kingdom this evening at ONE Championship: Call to Greatness hosted by Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) behemoth ONE Championship in Singapore.
Khon Sichan and Kong Sambo and are signed up for the Singapore bout, with the PROKOUT Top Team and Team Phnom Penh MMA pugilist Sichan making a welcome return to the cage after an extended absence. Backed by experienced coach Alan Mccune, he will face Indonesia’s Rudy Augustian.
Sichan, a Khmer Warrior Challenge Champion, last fought at the Kuala Lumpur ONE: Visions of Victory in March last year earning a decision victory over Riski Umar.
In that contest, what was billed as a battle between two elite strikers soon turned into submissions being traded on the mat.
Umar got the first near finish when he locked up a triangle choke in the opening round. It looked as if it might put the Cambodian away, but to his credit, he toughed it out before finally wiggling free. Then, it was a reversal of fortunes in the second frame. Sichan took the action to the mat, where he then fished for a rear-naked choke to put Umar away.
The back-and-forth action continued into the final round, with Sichan landing another takedown before moving into the mount. It led to “King Kong” reversing positions just before the match came to an end.
The judges did not have an easy job after such a close affair, but ultimately the nod went to Sichan by split decision.
Meanwhile, Siem Reap-based Kong Sambo of Kingdom Fight Gym (KFG) will face China’s Zhang Chenglong in a ONE Super Series bantamweight contest.
