A senior CPP official yesterday issued a statement condemning former opposition leader Sam Rainsy for perceived prejudice against Chinese nationals in the Kingdom.

In a Facebook post yesterday, Mr Rainsy criticised the behaviour of Chinese nationals in the provinces of Preah Sihanouk and Koh Kong as arrogant and discriminatory to locals.

“The newly-arrived Chinese in Cambodia, loaded with dollars, show their scorn for the local Cambodian population, who are shocked by their behaviour and habits,” Mr Rainsy said.

Mr Rainsy also slammed the Chinese government for offering political and financial stability in exchange for the Kingdom’s natural resources.

“They [the Chinese] must return the land that was seized from our villagers, close their casino chains, and take their mafia and triad gangs, associated with their investments and establishments in Cambodia, back to China,” he said.

Officials at the Chinese embassy could not be reached for comment yesterday.

CPP spokesman Sok Eysan yesterday slammed Mr Rainsy’s comments as provoking hatred against Chinese and as a move to garner support against Prime Minister Hun Sen.

“This is another incitement trick by Rainsy to fool his supporters,” Mr Eysan said, noting that Mr Rainsy had used the same tactic in the past. “Rainsy is actually intending to ruin Cambodians and the country. He will realise he will never come to power.”

Justice Ministry spokesman Chin Malin yesterday said some Chinese nationals lack understanding of Cambodian laws.

“There are more Chinese investors and tourists in the country, so crimes are likely to emerge by this group,” Mr Malin said. “I think police are educating them about Cambodian laws. Everything is under control.”

According to a Tourism Ministry report, 1.5 million Chinese tourists visited the Kingdom last year, an increase when compared to 2017’s 1.2 million.
