Police in Kratie province have arrested a suspect in the murder of a local journalist who was beaten to death by a group of people in Snuol district’s Pi Thnou commune last week.

Colonel Chan Sok Kim, Snuol district police chief, yesterday said that after investigating and questioning some witnesses, police officers arrested Vorn Vinh, 19, on Thursday in the commune.

Col Sok Kim said that during his interrogation, Mr Vinh said that on the day of the incident he and two friends, Lim Sokong, 21, and Rith Seiha, 21, waited for journalist Sorn Sithy to drive by them on a motorbike.

He said that the suspect claimed that when the victim and two friends arrived, Mr Sokong and Mr Seiha threw stones at them, causing Mr Sithy to fall off the motorbike.

“Mr Vinh denied killing the victim and accused the other two suspects who are at large of beating Mr Sithy,” Col Sok Kim said.

He added that Mr Vinh also said that after the assault, the three of them called another friend to join them before they fled the scene.

Col Sok Kim added that the suspect also claimed that Mr Sithy and a group of friends had an argument with his group when they attended a wedding party earlier that day and that is why he and his friends waited to ambush the journalist.

He noted that Mr Vinh was sent to the provincial police headquarters for questioning on Thursday.

“Now we are continuing to investigate this case and are seeking to arrest the other suspects linked to this murder,” said Col Sok Kim.

Major General Lun Sophath, provincial police chief, was not available for comment yesterday.
