Kampong Thom provincial authorities yesterday slammed social media posts urging farmers to stage a rally for better rice prices today.
The post urged farmers to stage the protest at the Prek Bos bridge.
“Please join the rally to demand for higher [selling] rice prices,” it said. “Please use a truck to haul rice and block the road. I will do the same.”
Major General Ouk Kosal, chief of provincial police, said authorities investigated the post and concluded that it was a hoax.
“There is no Prek Bos bridge in the province and no farmer had planned to rally,” Maj Gen Kosal said, noting that he suspects the post was created by a group who wants to cause chaos. “It was just a hoax intended to incite hatred against the government.”
“We do not think there will be a rally [today],” Maj Gen Kosal added. “However, our police officers are trying to identify who are behind the post and take legal action against them.”
Kan Salon, deputy director of the provincial agriculture department, yesterday said rice farmers are currently facing hard times when it comes to selling their crop.
“The price has not been stable and farmers are complaining about this,” Mr Salon said. “I haven’t heard anything about a rally. I think it was just a hoax made by an opposition group.”
