A villager in Battambang province’s Ratanak Mondol district was killed after stepping on a landmine on Wednesday.
Heng Ratana, Director General of Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC) said that a man was killed on Wednesday when he stepped on an anti-personnel landmine while harvesting bamboo in Ratanak Mondol district’s Phlouv Meas commune.
According to district police’s report, the landmine was planted during decades of civil war and it detonated when the man identified as Sem Sari, 37, stepped on it while cutting bamboo along the stream.
“The landmine exploded and destroyed almost all the body of the victim at the scene,” it said, adding that the authorities came to see the victim and handed the body to his family after examination.
On Monday, the cluster munitions or cluster bombs were found in Tboung Khmum province where they were wrapped in a two-metre pipe with about 130 smaller submunitions inside. The experts have removed the munitions from the area.
