The government issued a directive forbidding the issuance of diplomatic passports to foreigners who are naturalized Cambodian citizens and are appointed as advisors or assistants to ministries. The Prime Minister signed it on Wednesday, Jan.9.
The PM said that until now, some ministries and institutions appointed foreigners as advisors or assistants, and some of those who have obtained Cambodian citizenship have applied for diplomatic passports.
He finds it unnecessary that they should carry diplomatic passports, and not having one will prevent misuse/abuse of the same.
Hun Sen made clear that diplomatic passports are not to be issued to advisors or assistants who are not Cambodian by birth. Exceptions can only be made by government order.
He added that all concerned ministries and institutions must take diplomatic passports from their advisors and assistants who do not hold citizenship by birth, and hand them over to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
The PM ordered the Foreign Ministry to determine which naturalized persons been issued a diplomatic passport and void it; he also ordered the Interior Ministry to prevent the use of such passports to cross national borders.
