Dealing with mental health issues

Som Kanika / Khmer Times Share:

Cages aren’t made of iron; they are made of thoughts and perplexing ideas. And those overwhelming thoughts and ideas can make you fall into depression – one of the common medical illnesses that affects thousands of people all over the world. It’s a silent killer no one seems to have a clear idea about.

According to the World Health Organisation, more than 300 million people worldwide now live with depression. Less than half of those receive treatment because of fear and discrimination arising from stigma and a lack of available services. And Cambodia is no exception. Many people, especially youth, are seen to undergo severe problems of depression.

This seemingly unspoken issue ignited Project Inspire Cambodia to initiate a conference centered on the wellbeing of Cambodian youth. Led by Sou Jolyda, in collaboration with SSEAYP International Cambodia (SIC), Project Inspire will be conducting the third annual conference “Project Inspire 2019” under the theme “The Wellbeing of Youth” which will be conducted on Sunday, 20th January 2019 at the Cambodia-Korea Cooperation Center (CKCC) from 9 am to 5 pm.

For this year, the conference will feature group discussions on mental illness, three TED-style talks followed by a panel discussion on the wellbeing and mental health of youth. The conference will feature mentors who are professionals in relevant areas such as Venerable Kou Sopheap, Mr Phan Chanpeou, the Head of Psychology Department, Dr Muny Sothara from Preah Kosomak Hospital, and Ms Catherine V. Harry, a social blogger. With all the open discussions, participants will be made aware of mental health issues and would gain a

deeper understanding on the importance of looking after their mental health in the current society.

Project Inspire Conference is an annual conference which aims to inspire Cambodian youth to be open to distinct perspectives of chosen topics to promote the culture of peace.

Project Inspire’s 2019 conference will serve as a platform that encourages youths to expose themselves to morning small group bonding activities, afternoon presentations from relevant experts, followed by a one-hour insightful panel discussion. These activities will allow the participants to analyse their own perceptions towards the chosen topic and widen their perspectives, which are important for promoting peace and harmony.

Furthermore, participants will have a chance to discuss how people should manage their mental health as well as what strategies they should choose to deal with outside influences.

To those who want to join the conference, grab your tickets at IFL, CamEd, Stanford and other universities in Phnom Penh. Tickets are available for purchase at 20,000 riels, inclusive of lunch and gift packs. Or you can register online through https://goo.gl/forms/6MTvqkDTDtydzYHx1.
