SIHANOUKVILLE (Khmer Times)  – The hunt continues this week for three escaped prisoners who slipped away from their guards outside the provincial prison on Koh Kong last Thursday afternoon.

Four prisoners had originally been on the run after they absconded whilst on work duty near to the prison walls. One escaped prisoner, Poeun Da, 25, has been caught and returned to prison.

The escapees – who are facing trial on charges of “operating illegal online games” – are not considered dangerous. They’re currently being hunted by an additional 30 to 40 police officers assigned by the provincial chief of police, as well as dozens of law enforcement officials already involved in the pursuit.

Provincial police in Koh Kong are thought to be investigating how exactly the escape happened. The prison’s deputy chief, Lieutenant Colonel Seng Leang, has admitted to the media that the “carelessness” of his guards was perhaps to blame for the getaway.

Seng Leang also suggested that better training would be undertaken to “prevent prisoners from escaping or breaking out from prison in the future.”

The investigation and manhunt continues.
