The Secretariat of Civil Aviation has created a commission to investigate the case of a man who snuck into Siem Reap International Airport, climbed into a plane’s landing gear and died during take off when he fell out.

Sinn Chanserey Vutha, spokesman of the Secretariat of Civil Aviation, yesterday said the commission is tasked with getting to the truth of the case to ensure such an incident is not repeated.

“Today, our commission started to investigate to find out the truth,” Mr Chanserey Vutha said. “We will take a week to investigate this case and find out the truth. We will then issue a report.”

The incident occurred at about 10.20am on Monday and deputy provincial police chief Brigadier General Phoeung Chendareth yesterday said police are still trying to identify the deceased.

Police received a call at about 10.30am on Monday from airport authorities regarding the death. Police then went to the scene to investigate and reviewed CCTV footage.

Brig Gen Chendareth said he found footage of the man who was walking between multiple planes and disappearing. Based on the footage, police suspect the man climbed up one of the plane’s landing gear and fell asleep.

He noted that police officers found cut barbed wires at the scene and believe the man snuck into the airport at night.

“We suspect that the victim had a mental illness,” Brig Gen Chendareth said on Tuesday. “The person was not a terrorist.”

Mr Chanserey Vutha yesterday said he does not know whether the man was suffering from a mental illness and the commission will determine what really happened because local authorities issued a report too quickly.
