Siem Reap Provincial Court on Saturday charged and jailed three foreign nationals accused of assaulting a man at a bar in Siem Reap city.

The incident occurred on Thursday at about 2am at the Drink Beers Bar in Svay Dangkum commune’s Svay Dangkum village.

Keuth Vannareth, deputy court prosecutor, identified the three accused as 33-year-old Serbian tourist Strahih Jadackovic, 29-year-old Slovakian tourist Marko Vitorovic and 32-year-old Indian tourist Jaiyesh Faujdar.

Mr Vannareth identified the victim as 42-year-old German expatiate Mario Maehl Meyer.

He noted that that all the three were charged with “intentional violence with aggravating circumstances” and could be sent to prison for up to three years each if convicted.

Major Nuth Seng, an officer with the provincial general crimes department, said on Wednesday night at about 11:30pm, the accused met to drink at the bar in Svay Dangkum commune.

At about 2am, the accused became drunk and got into a verbal argument with the victim.

A physical altercation ensued, causing the victim to be beaten and subsequently lose consciousness.

“During interrogation at the provincial police station, the accused admitted to committing the offence,” Maj Seng said. “They confessed that they became angry after the victim called them ‘jobless backpackers’.”

“They assaulted the victim until he lost consciousness,” he added, noting that police were called to apprehend the accused and to send the victim to hospital for medical treatment.

The assault left the victim with a broken ankle, three missing teeth and a broken jaw.

The accused are now in jail pending trial.
