KAMPONG CHNANG, (Khmer Times) – On Wednesday a baby boy was rescued by his father hours after the mother, thinking it was a stillbirth, had buried him behind the house.
The 31-year-old mother, Phan Thon, unexpectedly gave birth to the boy as she was relieving herself “in the bushes”. Having very limited knowledge of proper postnatal procedure, she thought her baby was dead because it didn’t move and it didn’t make any sound. She then buried the body, and told her husband, San Ren, that she had had a stillbirth.
Three hours later, her husband was curious as to whether the child was a boy or girl, so he went to dig it out and check. But he found that the baby was breathing and rushed it to the nearest health center.
The couple has two girls and this new infant is their only son. They live in a small home in a very rural area of Kampong Chhnang province. Mrs. Thon admitted never having been to a health center because her family is poor.
A midwife at the Boribo Health Center confirmed that the 3.2 kg baby is alive and healthy.
