A young Cambodian Kun Khmer fighter remains in critical condition after being the victim of a traffic accident on Christmas Day.
Eh Rotha, a 19-year old fight prospect, was hit by a car on at 7am on Tuesday with witnesses reporting the driver then reversing his vehicle and driving over the fighter a second time.
Rotha, who is famed for his lethal kicking ability suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Calmette Hospital where he was stabilised. Latest reports suggest Rotha will be imminently transferred to Royal Phnom Penh Hospital where he can expect the better care necessary for his critical condition.
While not confirmed in this case, so-called “double-hit cases” allow the perpetrator to pay a smaller amount for causing death than for ongoing hospital care. Compensation for killing a victim in a traffic accident is often relatively small. By contrast, paying for lifetime care for a disabled survivor can cost many times more.
Support for the fighter saw donations pour in with fellow Asian fighters also showing their support on Facebook. Kun Khmer legend Eh Phuthong, Filipino fighter Rockie Bactol, Indonesian ONE Championship pugilist Anthony Engelen, and Cambodian Top Team(CTT) trainers Hun Chanreach and Nicholas JJ Lee all urged the public to show their support.
Yesterday afternoon, Bun Rany, President of the Cambodian Red Cross and wife of Prime Minister Hun Sen, conveyed a message through representatives as well as a donation to medical costs. She also appealed to relevant authorities to capture the perpetrator. Donations are still being sought for Rotha’s considerable medical bills. A GoFundMe page has been set-up and donations can also be deposited via Wing through CTT’s ChanReach at 089333705.
